BIOGRAPHY

Maria Tomasula makes pictures that center on the experience of embodiment. She gives visual form to a sense of being that understands selfhood as materially entangled with all the phenomena and entities that shape us, like shared histories, environmental toxins, social practices, and beliefs. Her paintings have been shown in venues across the country including at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Mexican Art, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Her work has been written about and appeared in many publications including in The New York Times, ARTnews, the Chicago Tribune and The New Yorker. She is represented by Zolla/Lieberman Gallery in Chicago and Forum Gallery in New York, and teaches at the University of Notre Dame.
